That's extraordinary

 Hello!

We are going to do a listening activity related to unit 3 That's extraordinary. It's about a paralimpic swimmer. This video is engaging, inspiring, and provides an authentic perspective on the life of a Paralympic athlete. It is a great choice as it introduces themes of perseverance, inclusion, and sports, making it relatable and meaningful.

The main objectives of this session are:

- To develop listening comprehension skills using authentic materials.

- To expand vocabulary related to sports, disabilities, and personal achievements.

- To enhance our ability to extract key information from spoken texts.

- To encourage oral communication through discussion and reflection.

Sequence of Activities:

1. Pre-listening: Discussion about sports, disabilities, and the Paralympic Games.  Introduction of key vocabulary using images and contextual examples.

2. During listening: Using EDPUZZLE, I edited the video into short, manageable segments and embedded comprehension questions (multiple choice, open-ended, and fill-in-the-gaps) to ensure active engagement.

3. Post-listening: Group discussion on the most inspiring aspects of the video. Students will work in pairs to create a short profile of a Paralympic athlete and present it to the class.

Flipped Classroom:

I implemented a partially flipped classroom approach. Students were required to watch the EDPUZZLE video at home and complete the interactive questions. This allowed them to familiarize themselves with the content before coming to class. In the classroom, we focused on post-listening tasks, including group discussions and presentations. This approach enabled a more interactive and communicative lesson, as students arrived prepared and ready to engage in meaningful conversations.

Highlights and Enjoyable Aspects

Students found the video highly inspiring and engaging. EDPUZZLE's interactive features kept students motivated and provided instant feedback on their comprehension. The group discussion and athlete profile activity encouraged collaboration and creativity. The flipped approach allowed for more in-depth discussions during class time.

Areas for Improvement:

Next time, I would consider incorporating a follow-up activity where students research another Paralympic athlete and share their findings. Some students found some parts of the video challenging to understand; I could provide subtitles or a transcript to aid comprehension. I could include a debate activity on the importance of inclusion in sports to deepen engagement.

  1. Good morning!

After visiting this blog, "In English, please" from CPR Valle del Guadalfeo, I can say that it has several standout features that make it effective and engaging for learners as well as for teachers. Some of these positive aspects are the following ones.

It frequently incorporates real-world content, like videos of Paralympic athletes, making lessons relevant and inspiring. This helps students connect with the material on a deeper level, thanks above all to the use of authentic material.

This blog utilizes tools like EDPUZZLE, which embeds comprehension questions directly into videos. This interactive approach ensures students stay engaged and receive immediate feedback, improving their listening and comprehension skills.

We can also see some modern learning approaches, such as the flipped classroom model, allowing students to watch educational content at home before engaging in interactive class discussions and activities. This maximizes class time for more in-depth conversations and hands-on learning.

There is a variety of learning activities to choose from, such as vocabulary practice, games, and group discussions. It even introduces cultural aspects related to English-speaking countries, enhancing the learning experience.

Lastly, there is a clear emphasis on making learning fun and collaborative, with students encouraged to leave comments, participate in challenges, and engage in meaningful discussions. This creates a sense of community and motivation to practice English regularly.

Overall, in my opinion this blog is well-structured, student-centered, and utilizes modern tools and methods to enhance the learning experience.

  2. Hello!
I have been reading your blog carefully and I consider it a good place where to find inspiration when looking for ideas to teach English.
I love the way you structure your posts and how clear you explain everything. They are very instructive and useful.
If I had to talk about something to improve, the right column is a little bit messy. Maybe if you write titles in every section we could see better what arte they about.
As most of the blogs we have created to do this course, we are "under construction".
Keep it up to date because is worth it.

    Regards!
